It is my overwhelming sad and painful responsibility to report that Denton Byers (wreck), my close friend and dive buddy, suffered a brain aneurism on Saturday and is in gravely critical condition at this time.

Since his arrival at the hospital on Saturday afternoon he has received outstanding medical care and examination by neurosurgeons, trauma specialists, a dive/hyperbaric doctor and a range of other specialists at two trauma/ICU hospitals.

The doctors’ conclusion is that Denton experienced a sudden aneurism due to an unknown and pre-existing weakness of a blood vessel deep in his brain. While the incident occurred as he was exiting the water after a relatively shallow dive, they assured the family that this incident could have occurred at any time with the right conditions. The specialist also stressed that there was little that could have been done once the aneurism occurred and that that all possible care and actions were taken.

I have been with Denton and his family since he arrived at the hospital and this is the first chance that I have had to post this report. Denton and I made a pact last year that if anything ever happened to one of us, the other would publish the full details of the incident on TDS in the hope that others may learn from the incident. Of course, I will fulfill my promise. However, I ask for your patience and understanding while I help my friend and his family through this dark time to its pending conclusion.

This report was originally published on TDS. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Denton and to his family and friends.
